Boardinghouse keeper |
On March 16 [1883], shortly after, 8 o'clock, a fire broke out in the Temperance Boardinghouse, situate at the corner of Waimea and Hardy streets, and occupied by Mr Gross. A cry of fire was followed immediately by the ringing of the bell opposite the Theatre; but, owing to the ropes becoming foul, the bell had only been struck once or twice when it became impossible, to ring it further. While the alarm was being raised, several people rushed to the building to ascertain who might be within and render all the aid within their power; but by the time those who had a hundred yards to run arrived on the scene, it was impossible to gain admittance, as the old part of the building was by then a mass of fire, the lean-to adjacent to Mr Belton's shop being the only part free of fire, and from this nothing of consequence appears to have been saved, but in the darkness and thick smoke it was impossible to see anything. Within a very short time the Fire Brigade arrived on the scene, and a copious supply of water speedily checked the flames, the adjacent building, used by Mr Bolton as a seed and florist's shop, being saved without injury. Mr Gross, the occupier of the Temperance Boardinghouse, with two of his children, has been away at Motueka for the past month; and Mrs Gross, who had her two youngest children with her, was conducting the business. Just now she had but one lodger, a lady; and during the absence of her boarder, who had gone to chapel, Mrs Gross determined upon visiting an acquaintance. She was about to put the children to bed before going out and leaving them alone for an hour, but the youngest commencing to cry, she took them with her, and to the crying of the child is probably due the fact that the two little ones were not burned to death. When Mrs Gross left the place it was perfectly safe to all appearances, but she had not been absent more than about an hour before the place was ablaze. She is unable to account for the fire in any way unless it originated from the chimney, and a rumor that a kerosene lamp had exploded must be erroneous, as the gas is laid on to the house. Of the contents of the building, virtually nothing was saved; but Mr Gross had his furniture insured for £100 in the Norwich Union office. The building, which was owned by Mr Gorrie, was one of the oldest in Nelson. Many years ago in stood in Trafalgar street, and was the original store of Messrs E. Buxton and Co., but it was moved on wheels to its present site to make room for the brick warehouse of that firm. The building, after being converted into a dwelling, contained eight rooms, those upstairs being small, and a lean-to between the older part and Mr Belton's shop, containing two rooms was added not very long since. Mr Gorrie had the house insured in the South British office for £150. In closing our notice we must say that the Fire Brigade, by the admirable way in which they turned out and checked this fire, fully proved how much they deserve the support of the public and the insurance companies.
On March 19th, an inquest was held at the Commercial Hotel touching the late fire at the Temperance Boardinghouse, when the inquiry was conducted before the Coronor, Dr Boor, and a jury consisting of Messrs J. Gilbertson (foreman), J. Hounsell, A. Oakey, F. Main, H. Budden, S. Crossman, J. Kitching, G. Pamely, H. M'Gee, T. Muncaster, B. Chisholm, J. Heyhoe, and, T. Duncan. The evidence did not disclose any particulars of special interests, the following being the names of the witnesses:-- Mr G. F. Peirce (Manager of the New Zealand Insurance Company, Auckland), - W. Lock, Annie Gross, Annie Cairns, and Henry Newport. The evidence pointed to the fact that the fire originated in the back kitchen, and the jury returned a verdict to the effect that the fire was accidentally caused through a foul chimney.
