    • DEATH OF MR. CHARLES HIGGINS.
One of the earliest settlers in the upper valley of Ma Ma Creek, Mr. Charles Higgins, of Fordsdale, died on Thursday. He left Plymouth for Australia on May 26, 1880. After landing in Brisbane, he went to Boxmoor station, near Grantham, and worked there for three years for the late Mr. J. T. Briggs. Then he wandered about for a time, working in many places, seeing the beginning of settlement in several parts of West Moreton. In 1882, he married Miss Anna Mahaffey, daughter of Mr. William Mahaffey, from the other side of Boxmoor. In 1887, he selected land near the saw-mill under the Homestead Selection Act. Later, he had a farm near the Fordsdale Post Office, and for several years now he has been living with his son, Mr. C. G. Higgins. He was one of the first settlers of the locality, and remembered practically all of the valley as dense scrub. Mr Thomas Ballard, who built a saw-mill on the bank of the creek, was about the first of all. After Mr. Higgins came, Mr. Ludwig Wegner, Mr. H. Wilkinson, Mr. John Dumschat, and Mr. Tom Bierton, were some of the next selectors. When he came to the district himself, Grantham had a little shed for a railway station. Mr. Higgins told many stories of incidents early in the history of the district. In 1863, just after the regiment's return from the Indian Mutiny, Mr. Higgins joined the 53rd Regiment of Foot, and was in it for two years. One of the treasures of his old age is a picture of himself as a recruit in his first scarlet uniform. His wife was burned to death many years ago, leaving him with one child.
