  	Obituary BLENHEIM AREA PIONEER PASSES LAIDLEY, April 13.-Another pioneer of the Blenheim district, Mr. Carl Frederick Wilhelm Jackwitz, passed away at the South Brisbane Auxiliary Hospital recently, at the age of 87 years and seven months. The late Mr. Jackwitz was in fairly good health until he met with an accident a few months ago and was admitted to the Brisbane General Hospital and later to the South Brisbane Auxiliary Hospital where he was a patient for the past three months. Born in Germany on August 16, 1860, he came to Australia with his parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Hermann Jackwitz when he was 18 years old. They embarked in a sailing ship and the voyage took 18 weeks. The family settled at Lowood and later moved to Blenheim, where Mr. Jackwitz took up a selection of scrub land now occupied by Mr. Clem Panzram. On August 7, 1884, Mr. Jackwitz was married to Miss Bertha Schroeder, at Tarampa, Rev. Lock officiating. The couple carved a home for themselves in the virgin scrub and Mr. Jackwitz spent 45 years there as a farmer, after which he retired to Laidley and lived in retirement for another 19 years. The late Mr. Jackwitz was a staunch member of the Blenheim Baptist Church for 66 years. He was one of the pioneers of the Baptist faith in the district and a foundation member of the church. He took an active part in the work of the church for many years and was a lay preacher, a deacon, and was granted the highest honour the church could confer when he was made a life deacon in recognition of his loyal services. He regularly attended services up to a short time before he entered hospital. The late Mr. Jackwitz is survived by his widow, two daughters. Mesdames H. Hauschildt (Blenheim), and H. Wegener (Ma Ma Creek), one son, Mr. F. Jackwitz (Forest Hill), three brothers, Messrs. Albert, Otto and Paul (all of Blenheim), 20 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren. A son, Mr. William Jackwitz, predeceased him 30 years ago, and a daughter, Mrs. F. Kowaltzke, died two years ago. The funeral, which was largely attended, took place from the Baptist Church, Blenheim, after a short service conducted by Pastor A. W. Law, assisted by Rev. B. Hohnke (Kalbar) to the Laidley Cemetery, where Pastor Law officiated at the graveside service. A memorial service will be held in the Blenheim Baptist Church next Sunday morning.

  	BLENHEIM'S FIRST GOLDEN WEDDING. FAMILY AND RESIDENTS HONOUR MR. AND MRS. JACKWITZ. LAIDLEY, August 23. A pleasant function took place at the residence of Mr. F. Kowaltzke, Blenheim, on Saturday, August 4. The event was the celebration of the golden wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Jackwitz. The function was organised as a surprise by their son and daughters, Mr. F. Jackwitz, Mrs. H. Hauschildt, Mrs. H. Wegner, and Mrs. F. Kowaltzke. The bridal party were met by members of the Lilydale Band, about half a mile from the residence. The band escorted the happy couple to the accompaniment of appropriate music. On arrival they were met by their children and grandchildren, and friends, and cameras were used. On arrival each guest was presented with a blue and gold rosette, as a memento of the occasion. It was the first golden wedding celebrated at Blenheim. At noon the bridal couple and guests adjourned to the verandah, where the tables were laid. They were beautifully decorated with golden-coloured flowers and streamers, the work of the old couple's grandchildren. In front of the "bride and bridegroom" was a very handsome two-tier wedding cake, which was made by their daughter, Mrs. Hauschildt, and iced and decorated in white and gold by their grandchild, Miss Hilda Hauschildt. Rev. W. K. Holmans presided. He expressed his pleasure at being present on such a happy occasion, congratulating the bride and bridegroom on having attained the 50th anniversary of their wedding day. The toast, "The Bride and Bridegroom," was proposed by Mr. F. Blake, and supported by Cr. T. L. Moon. Mrs. Heinrich, of Kalbar, was asked to make a presentation to the happy couple from their children. She congratulated the happy couple, and feelingly referred to Mrs. Jackwitz's kindness to her in the early years of her work at Blenheim. She also apologised for the absence of Rev. J. Heinrich. Mr. F. Topp, on behalf of himself and other members of the band, thanked the promoters for their kind invitation. In the course of the afternoon the band played selections, which were appreciated by the company. The evening was spent in games and community singing, and at the end all sang "For They Are Jolly Good Fellows." EARLY DAYS. Mr. Carl Friedrich Wilhelm Jackwitz was born at Breslau (Germany) on August 15, 1860. At the age of 18 years, he set sail from Hamburg with his parents in the German sailing ship, "Herschel," and after 16½ weeks' sailing the first land he saw was Maryborough, Queensland. After staying at Maryborough for a short time the family went to Brisbane, and from there to Tarampa. After living there for three years, they removed to Blenheim, known at that time as Sandy Creek. They were amongst the first pioneers. In 1888 Mr. Jackwitz took up a selection of 76 acres on the western side of Sandy Creek. In 1884 be married Miss Bertha Schroder, of Tarampa, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Thos. Nock, Methodist Minister. Mrs. Jackwitz and her parents arrived in Brisbane from Germany 69 years ago. After living at Oxley Creek, Brisbane River, for a short period, they took up a selection at Tarampa. When Mr. Jackwitz first came to Laidley there was only one hotel (Chambers's), one store (Glesman's), Mr. H. Head's blacksmith shop, and Mr. P. Nielsen, saddler. Mr. Jackwitz was a bootmaker by trade, but he took on farming, and with his wife had to fell the scrub, plant their crops with a hoe, make their own road to their property, and cart their produce to market, three bags at a time, in a wooden trolley made by himself. The lowest price he received for maize was 9d. a bushel. They had also to carry their water in buckets for three miles. He was a great lover of band music, and was a foundation member of the first and only brass band formed at Blenheim-by Mr. C. Cross. He was also band conductor for a period, and the band played for Church functions, the show, and sports. He was a foundation member of the first Baptist Church, which was built on his father's property, and in conjunction with Mr. C. Mutzleberg, opened the first Baptist Sunday School, being Superintendent of the school, and choir conductor for several years. He still takes a keen interest in the work of his Church. The children living are one son and three daughters, 21 grandchildren, one great grandchild. One son died 18 years ago. Mr. Jackwitz has five brothers--Messrs. Herman (Tarampa), Wilhelm (Coominya), Albert (Forest Hill), Otto and Paul (Blenheim).

  	60 YEARS MARRIED Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Jackwitz Entertained About 200 guests assembled at the residence of Mr. F. Kowaltzke, Blenheim, on Saturday, August 5, in honour of the 60th anniversary of the wedding day of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Jackwitz of Laidley. The diamond wedding celebrations were arranged by Mesdames H. Hauschildt, G. Wegener. and F. Kowaltzke (daughters) and Mr. F. Jackwitz (sen.), Forest Hill. The Apostolic Band of Hatton Vale, conducted by Mr T. Zumbansen, was in attendance, and on the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Jackwitz, played the "Wedding March." After greetings and congratulations, friends sat down at the tables arranged on the spacious verandahs. Floral and streamer decorations added to the attractiveness of the scene. A three-tiered wedding cake, made by Mrs. H. Hauschildt, was on the table in front of the bride and bridegroom. Rev. S. Newell occupied the chair, and proposed the loyal toast, the band playing, and guests singing the National Anthem. Mr. T. L. Moon proposed the health of the guests of honour. He said he had known Mr. and Mrs. Jackwitz many years, they had been close neighbours and loyal friends. It gave him a thrill to see the five sisters and brother of Mrs. Jackwitz present. Seated next to Mrs. Jackwitz were Mrs. Wm. Jackwitz (Minden), Mrs. F. Kuhn, Mrs. H. Jackwitz, and Mrs. W. Litzow (Tarampa), Mrs Pieper, Vernor (sisters), and Mr. Wm. Schroder, of Lowood (brother). Mr. A. G. Kluck, of Grantham, an old friend of the family, also gave greetings. and told of some of the experiences of the past. It gave him much pleasure, he said, to see the brother of Mr. Jackwitz present. Seated at the table were Messrs. Otto, Alfred, and Paul Jackwitz. Mr. Herman Jackwitz, another brother, was unable to be present, The band played, "O God, Our Help," and "There's a Land That Is Fairer Than Day," favourite hymns of the aged couple. Mr. Cliff Moon proposed the health of the sons and daughters of the "Bride and Bridegroom," Mr. F. Jackwitz, sen., responding. Mr. Geo. Wegener proposed the toast of grandchildren--Wm and Eddie Hauschildt, and H. and Allan Wegener--serving with the forces. Mr. Jackwitz, sen., in responding, said it was a joy to meet their many friends. It was indeed a family re-union--brothers and sisters, and children--also 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Telegrams of congratulation were received from Craftsman H. P. Wegener, and Jack and Lena Cross, of Moore. Congratulations and an apology for absence were received from Cr. W. Schluter. Games and music were thoroughly enjoyed during the afternoon, and after tea musical items and community singing added to the pleasure of the occasion. The Apostolic Band also added greatly to the enjoyment of the celebration. Two members of the band contributed musical and elocutionary items. On Sunday, August 6.- at the Baptist Church, Blenheim, the Pastor referred to the many years that two of their members had been spared to each other. Sixty years was a long time in the life of a married couple. Mr. Jackwitz was now their senior Life Deacon. The father of Mr. Jackwitz, together with the late Mr C. Mutzelburg and Mr. F. Kirwitz, had been the first to hold Baptist services at Blenheim, and were founders of the Baptist Church there. On behalf of the Church he asked Mr. and Mrs Jackwitz to accept a token of the love and esteem in which they are held by Church members. Mr. Jackwitz suitably responded. Mr. and Mrs. Jackwitz were married at Rosewood, by Rev. T. Nock, Methodist Minister, on August 7, 1884.
