- OMEO, January 11.
Yesterday William Boucher, aged 17 years, second son of Mr. Samuel Boucher, of Benambra, was working in a paddock belonging to Mr. J. Matthews, in company with James Murphy, when a thunderstorm overtook them. They took shelter under separate trees. Boucher left his tree, and joined Murphy, thinking it was dryer at that spot. Murphy, however, crossed over to the other tree, as there was not room for two under one tree. When Murphy looked back to Boucher he saw that the tree had been struck by lightning, and called out to Boucher to beware of a falling limb. Boucher did not reply, and, for a second or two, stood under the tree without movement. He then fell to the ground. Murphy ran to his assistance, but death must have been simultaneous with the fall of the limb of the tree.
