- LOST IN THE DARKNESS. [30 March 1909]
A RUNAWAY GIRL.
OMEO, Monday.-Considerable alarm and excitement were caused at Omeo and Benambra when news came to hand that a 12-year-old girl named Ruby Boucher had been lost at the morass. The child, who is an orphan, had been residing with her aunt, Mrs. T. Boucher, for some years, and had been sent out at dark to look for some sheep, but as she had not returned up till 9 o'clock in the evening, Mrs. Boucher became alarmed and, assisted by neigh- bours, went out to search. At 11 o'clock word was sent to Mounted-constable Ryan at Benambra, it being feared that the child had fallen over a rocky gorge, about 30ft deep, into the creek. The night was bitterly cold, there being a heavy frost, but the constable divested himself of his clothing and plunged into the waterhole, which is 10 to 12 feet deep in parts, and searched it thoroughly for close on an hour, without avail. Constable Ryan then organised search parties to scour the country, and at daybreak there were 30 or 40 horsemen in the party, the search being carried out unsuccessfully till 6 o'clock in the evening, when Mr. E. Spencer, of Bennmbra, brought the news that the child was at his place. The girl stated that when she got lost in the darkness looking for the sheep, she was afraid to return to the house in the morning for fear she would he beaten for staying out all night, so she made up her mind to run away. Constable Ryan had the girl cared for and subsequently placed her in the charge of Mrs. Dyer, of Benambra. [3]
