- Arrived in Sydney on board the 'Tamar' 29 January 1853, having sailed from Plymouth, England 12 October 1852. He was aged 39 years and with him were his (second) wife, Margaret 48 yrs, daughter Eliza 18 yrs and son William 13yrs. He was listed as being a stonemason from Duddingston, Midlothian, religion was Church of Scotland, and he could both read and write.
Passenger list records James's wife as Margaret aged 48, born in Edinburgh, can read and write. James and Margaret were married in London on 1 July 1852, not long before they left for Australia.

- At some stage between 1841 and 30 March 1851 the family moved from Edinburgh to London. Jemima died in 1851 in London and in 1852 James married Margaret McPhail . In 1853 he emigrated with his family to Australia.
