Occupation |
Barnawartha North, Victoria, Australia |
Stonemason and farmer |
- In Barnawartha, there is Colston's Quarry where William obtained stone. He built two houses for others in Barnawartha, one of which was "Innisfaile", which was burnt down in a bushfire in January 1952. The stones were removed after the fire, so nothing remains today of this house. No one seems to know which was the other house.
From the Book "Historic Barnawartha" - page 9 - "Colston's quarry was situated on the southern side of the Mt. Lady Franklin, overlooking the Indigo Creek. From this quarry, granite block facings were cut for the Barnawartha Railway Station siding and the Albury Railway Station siding. Granite facings from this quarry were also supplied for the original road bridge in Barnawartha across the Indigo Creek. Remnants of this are still seen today."
In 1878 he had the largest bullock in Australia according to the Australian Dictionary of Dates & Men of the Time by J H Heaton: BULLOCKS largest in Australia, property of Mr William Edward Colston of Barnawartha, Victoria, turned the scale at 3948 lb or 35 cwt 1 qr; height 6 ft 1 in; length 11 ft 9 in; girth 9 ft 10 in; at belly 10 ft 11 in; hocks 2 ft 1½ in; arm 3 ft; yoke 7 ft 8 in; age 8 years, 1878.
