Immigration |
2 Feb 1872 |
Lyttleton, New Zealand [6, 7] |
- Arrived as an assisted immigrant on the Charlotte Gladstone which had departed London, England 5 November 1871.
Mary J Lyne, 23, from Worcestershire, needlewoman or housemaid. She was paired with Esther C Gridley, 25, from Middlesex, also a needlewoman or housemaid. The fare for both was £29.10.
ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP CHARLOTTE GLADSTONE, FROM LONDON.
The fine vessel, J. Fox, commander, was signalled yesterday morning, and came up to anchorage at 8 o'clock. The health officers, Drs Donald and Rouse, and Mr March, emigration officer, went off to her, and on arriving alongside it was found that all on board were well, and that there had been no disease during the voyage. On proceeding to an inspection, all the compartments were found to be remarkably clean, the single girls berths especially so: and it being the last day on board, the compartments had been decorated by some very pretty mottoes. The immigrants generally are of a superior class, and the high praise given by Captain Fox of their conduct during the passage speaks well, especially for the single girls. The voyage throughout appears from all accounts to have been a very happy one, and was marked by an absence of disagreements which sometimes occur on board ship. Mr Bills, who is a passenger by this ship has brought out a large quantity of birds for the Acclimatisation Society. He has been very fortunate with them, none of the valuable birds having died during the passage, and this he attributes to the kindness he has received from the captain and officers of the ship. In addition to the birds purchased for the Society he brings out a present from the Zoological Society, consisting of some mandarin ducks; there is also on board some fine poultry, and also two steam launches and two racing gigs.
The following is the captain's report :-Discharged pilot and left Start Point on Nov. 5th, had strong winds from the eastward; 16th, passed Madeira ; 20th, caught the N.E. trades in lat. 24deg 23min N, 20deg 43min W. ; lost them on the 27th ; 28th, 4deg 9hrs. N, 24deg 45min W., had heavy rain and thunder and lightning; crossed the equator on December 3rd ; December 11th, sighted the Island of Trinidad; 20th, passed Tristan D'Acuma group ; 22nd, sighted Gough's Island ; 30th, passed the meridian of the Cape ; thence to January 6th had thick foggy weather; 29th, was off the New Zealand coast, and at 8 a.m. sighted the Snares; 30th, passed between the South Cape and Trap Rocks ; 31st made Cape Saunders, and spoke the brigantine Stranger, and asked to be reported ; thence had light winds up the coast. Captain Fox was presented by the passengers and immigrants before leaving, with flattering testimonials. Dr Symes, formerly of H.M. ship Galatea, is surgeon superintendent. Mrs Whyting is matron.
The following ships were spoken during the passage :-December 2nd, boarded ship Mary Shepherd, from Melbourne to London, 78 days out; all well ; sent letters by her. 5th, spoke ship Duucombe, from San Francisco, bound to Queenstown. 6th, spoke the Italian barque Helena, from Cadiz, bound to Buenos Ayres, 26 days out.
The Charlotte Gladstone brings a large cargo, and is consigned to Matheson's Agency.
