Golden Wedding:
Mr and Mrs C Spiller entertained a number of residents of Chatsworth and district at the Chatsworth hall on Saturday night [30 Jan 1926] to celebrate the golden wedding of Mr and Mrs Con Spiller. The hall had been decorated with gold bunting, and the chief feature of the decorations was a gold wedding bell, which was suspended above the guests of honour. The table was adorned with a three-tier wedding cake, made by Miss Gertie Edwards Woolooga, granddaughter of Mr and Mrs Spiller. Mr A Mulcahy presided. About 80 guests were present. Numerous presentations and speeches, congratulatory of the host and hostess attaining the jubilee of their wedding day, and wishing a continuance of their happiness, were made. Mr and Mrs Spiller received many testimonials from their family and relations, the guests, and the teachers of Chatsworth School. A pair of lounge chairs upholstered in leather were presented by Mr A C Payne on behalf of the residents of Chatsworth, and Mr J J Goodwin made a presentation on behalf of the school staff of xylonite clock. A toast list was honoured, and the proposals were made and seconded by Messrs. Frank Spiller, Robert Spiller, John Russel, Walter Allan, D Caulley, and Councillor H Percival. Mr Con Spiller expressed his pleasure on behalf of Mrs Spiller and himself at seeing so large an assembly and his sincere thanks for the many presents. He related his reminiscences of the fluctuations in Gympie's prosperity. On his arrival in Australia in 1881 he first resided in Maryborough whence soon after he travelled to Gympie by train. He had then three children. His present descendants included eight children and twenty-five grandchildren. During the evening an orchestra which comprised Miss D Weise (piano) Messrs G Edwards (violin) and J Butts (cornet) rendered musical selections. Songs and recitations were contributed by Messrs A C Payne, J J Goodwin, and Claude Smith. Extras supplied by Misses O'Neill (2) and Miss Granzin. At the conclusion of the principal ceremony, the children were entertained and dancing took place.
Diamond Wedding:
Mr. and Mrs. Cornelius Spiller, of Gympie, celebrated their diamond wedding on January 30 [1936] when about 150 guests were entertained in the Chatsworth Hall in their honour. Mr. Spiller spent four years in service with the 40th Somersetshire Regiment, and his marriage to Miss Mary Millicent Seager, of Devonshire, took place in 1876. In 1881 they sailed for Queensland in the steamer Durham with their three small children, and settled at Chatsworth, Gympie. They had a family of 11 children, eight of whom are still living. There are 29 grandchildren and 14 great-grand children.
Mr. Spiller was engaged in dairying and general farming, from which he retired eight years ago, and he was also interested in mining. He found time in his career to take part in public life, and was a councillor of the Widgee Shire for three years. He was one of the founders of the Chatsworth Hall, and chairman of the school committee.
Mr. and Mrs. Spiller's family comprises Mrs. O. H. Edwards (Woolooga), Mr. Jack Spiller (Woolooga), Mr. P. G. Spiller (Boowoogum), Mrs. O. Mason (Bell's Bridge), Mr. Frank Spiller (Cooroy), Mr. Charles Spiller (Kandanga), Mrs. D. Roberts (Gympie), and Mrs. H. Teitzel (Goomeri).
