OBITUARY :
Late Mrs. Rebecca Rowsthorn
There passed away at Penguin on December 24 an old and highly respected citizen of the district in the person of Mrs, Recbecca Rowsthorn, relict of the late Mr. William Rowsthorn. She was born at Littleworth, England, in 1856, and was the second eldest daughter of the late Joseph and Mary Atkins.
When 14 months old, she came with her parents to Tasmania. They left England in the sailing vessel Fortune, the journey taking 13 weeks. Her parents settled at Strathmore, and later Evandale.
At 21 years of age she was married to the late Mr. William Rowsthorn, and the first 14 years of their married life was spent at Evandale. About 50 years ago they moved to the Ulverstone district, and for five years lived on Mr. Sam Mason's property on Gawler Road.
About 45 years ago, with her late husband and family, she moved to South Riana. This was the third pioneer family to take up residence in that district. In 1914, she and her husband took up their residence in Penguin, where she remained until her death. Mr. Rowsthorn predeceased her by 15 years.
She leaves a family of four daughters and three surviving sons. One son, Walter, made the supreme sacrifice during the Great War. The family comprises Mesdames A. Robson, Victoria; D. Robson and H. Ling, South Riana; H. Dobson, Lileah; and Messrs. Cecil and Arthur, Penguin, Roland and Burnie.
A largely attended funeral took place on December 26. The service at the Methodist Church and graveside were conducted by Rev. W. J. Wilson, L.Th. The chief mourners were the three sons and four daughters. The carriers were four grandsons of deceased, R. and L. Ling, S. Robson and W. Rowsthorn. There are 26 grandchildren and 18 great-grand-children.
For 68 years deceased was a member of the Methodist Church, and regularly attended worship until within five weeks of her death. She loved the House of God. Always of a bright and cheery disposition, she was held in very high respect.
On Sunday evening a very largely attended in memoriam service in the Methodist, Penguin, was conducted by the minister of the circuit. The preacher took as his text, Prov. 31: 28 "Her children rise up and call her blessed." Four favorite hymns were sung, "Be Gone, Unbelief," "The Sands of Time," "Rock of Ages," and "Jesu, Lover of My Soul." Mr. R. Ling and Mrs. Casboult sang as a duet, "Some Time We'll Understand," and Mr. Max Ling rendered the solo, "Shadows." "Sun of My Soul" was sung by the choir. | ATKINS, Rebecca (I2731)

MR. PATRICK GRIEVE.
Another of the early residents of the Chiltern district has died in the person of Mr. Patrick Grieve, of Melbourne-road, Chiltern. Deceased was 92 years of age. He was attended by the Rev. J. O'Sullivan, who administered the Last Sacraments. He was a native of Londonderry, Ireland, and reached Victoria when a young man. He was in Ballarat
at the time of the Eureka riot, in 1854. Afterwards he went to Beeehworth. His first association with Chiltern began in 1859. He became a shareholder in the Township claim, from which some very fine returns were obtained. When deep and wet alluvial mining began at Xmastown, he was one of the first to work the lower portion of the Indigo lead. The mine never produced any substantial dividends. He became an engine driver at quite a number of claims along the lead and was for years connected with the Chiltern Valley ventures, but retired practically from active work about twenty years ago. He is survived by a wife and family of three sons (Messrs. Edward, Ballarat; Patrick and Thomas, Sydney), and five daughters (Mrs. M. Hayes, Albury; Mrs. T. Mulcahy, Chiltern; Mrs. C. Gordon, Prahran; Mrs. T. Bermingham, Glengarry; Mrs. T. Watson, Wagga). R.I.P. | GRIEVE, Patrick (I7724)

Yule, Mrs. Coulston, and Miss A. Knobel, of Albury. The funeral took place yesterday. | KNOBEL, Michael (I1067)
