60 YEARS MARRIED
Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Jackwitz Entertained
About 200 guests assembled at the residence of Mr. F. Kowaltzke, Blenheim, on Saturday, August 5, in honour of the 60th anniversary of the wedding day of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Jackwitz of Laidley. The diamond wedding celebrations were arranged by Mesdames H. Hauschildt, G. Wegener. and F. Kowaltzke (daughters) and Mr. F. Jackwitz (sen.), Forest Hill.
The Apostolic Band of Hatton Vale, conducted by Mr T. Zumbansen, was in attendance, and on the arrival of Mr. and Mrs. Jackwitz, played the "Wedding March."
After greetings and congratulations, friends sat down at the tables arranged on the spacious verandahs. Floral and streamer decorations added to the attractiveness of the scene. A three-tiered wedding cake, made by Mrs. H. Hauschildt, was on the table in front of the bride and bridegroom.
Rev. S. Newell occupied the chair, and proposed the loyal toast, the band playing, and guests singing the National Anthem.
Mr. T. L. Moon proposed the health of the guests of honour. He said he had known Mr. and Mrs. Jackwitz many years, they had been close neighbours and loyal friends. It gave him a thrill to see the five sisters and brother of Mrs. Jackwitz present.
Seated next to Mrs. Jackwitz were Mrs. Wm. Jackwitz (Minden), Mrs. F. Kuhn, Mrs. H. Jackwitz, and Mrs. W. Litzow (Tarampa), Mrs Pieper, Vernor (sisters), and Mr. Wm. Schroder, of Lowood (brother).
Mr. A. G. Kluck, of Grantham, an old friend of the family, also gave greetings. and told of some of the experiences of the past. It gave him much pleasure, he said, to see the brother of Mr. Jackwitz present.
Seated at the table were Messrs. Otto, Alfred, and Paul Jackwitz. Mr. Herman Jackwitz, another brother, was unable to be present, The band played, "O God, Our Help," and "There's a Land That Is Fairer Than Day," favourite hymns of the aged couple.
Mr. Cliff Moon proposed the health of the sons and daughters of the "Bride and Bridegroom," Mr. F. Jackwitz, sen., responding. Mr. Geo. Wegener proposed the toast of grandchildren--Wm and Eddie Hauschildt, and H. and Allan Wegener--serving with the forces.
Mr. Jackwitz, sen., in responding, said it was a joy to meet their many friends. It was indeed a family re-union--brothers and sisters, and children--also 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Telegrams of congratulation were received from Craftsman H. P. Wegener, and Jack and Lena Cross, of Moore. Congratulations and an apology for absence were received from Cr. W. Schluter.
Games and music were thoroughly enjoyed during the afternoon, and after tea musical items and community singing added to the pleasure of the occasion. The Apostolic Band also added greatly to the enjoyment of the celebration. Two members of the band contributed musical and elocutionary items.
On Sunday, August 6.- at the Baptist Church, Blenheim, the Pastor referred to the many years that two of their members had been spared to each other. Sixty years was a long time in the life of a married couple. Mr. Jackwitz was now their senior Life Deacon. The father of Mr. Jackwitz, together with the late Mr C. Mutzelburg and Mr. F. Kirwitz, had been the first to hold Baptist services at Blenheim, and were founders of the Baptist Church there. On behalf of the Church he asked Mr. and Mrs Jackwitz to accept a token of the love and esteem in which they are held by Church members. Mr. Jackwitz suitably responded.
Mr. and Mrs. Jackwitz were married at Rosewood, by Rev. T. Nock, Methodist Minister, on August 7, 1884. | Family F5839

80th Birthday
MR W. GOODMAN 74 YEARS AT LOWOOD
Lowood.-Mr. William Goodman, sen., who celebrated his 80th birthday on Tuesday, was born at Bathurst, New South Wales, on November 21, 1865. He came to Lowood in 1871, when he was six years of age. With his mother and father he settled on the property on which he has lived ever since. It was all standing scrub, and he did much of the clearing of the property. As a young man he took on contracts of scrub felling and for a time worked on the railway in a fencing and repair gang after the 1893 flood. He was cane-cutting at Childers for a short time. Mr. Goodman remembers the 1893 flood, which took every building away with the exception of the Goodman home. All crops and fences went.
LOGS ON THE RIVER
The pine cut in the district was all rafted down the river from Goodman's lane. It was shot into the river. Many logs went into the water and never came up or stuck with one end up, and could not be moved.
Mr. Goodman also tried his hand at carpentering. He helped to build St. James' Church of England at Lowood, and for a time worked on Hancock's saw bench at Lowood. When he came to Lowood it was only dense scrub. There were only surveyors' bridle tracks past his home, and to Fernvale. There were about 300 or 400 blacks about, and they used to meet and have their corroborees at the bora ring, where the Andrews family now live. Little black boys taught him to swim. Mr. Goodman laughed as he told of how he won a ploughing match at Lowood and was beaten by one furrow in the all-comers' match for the championship. He used two horses and a long-handled plough made by Mr. W. Bulow, of Fernvale.
Mrs. Goodman, who was Miss Hilda Dennien, died two years ago. There are one son, six daughters, 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
FRIENDS' GOOD WISHES
On Tuesday night between 70 and 80 friends and relatives of the Goodman family gathered, at the invitation of the family, at the home of Mr. W. Goodman, sen., to honour Mr. Goodman on his 80th birthday and offer good wishes. Many old friends met and exchanged reminiscences. Cards and dancing were enjoyed. Music was supplied by Messrs. H. Dennien, N. and V. Wendt (accordion), and Mr. H. Schulz (drums). The barn was used for dancing. It was brightened with evergreens and bougainvillea. At supper a beautifully-iced birthday cake, made by Miss Kate Goodman and iced by Mrs. Russell, was a feature. Vases of gerberas and antigonon beautified the tables. Mr. F. H. Kidd was chairman. After the loyal toast Mr. Kidd said everyone present was pleased to honour such a fine and worthy citizen as Mr. Goodman. They were all pleased to see him so hale and hearty. Mr. Alf. Scott (son-in-law) remarked that on Monday Mr. Goodman had been out on the farm planting maize. Mr. F. J. Gould also spoke. On behalf of the family, Mr. Kidd asked Mr. Goodman to accept a cosy arm chair and, on behalf of friends present, a fine array of gifts, with the hope that he would be long spared to make use of them. The guest of honour expressed his pleasure at being in the presence of so many old friends, and he thanked them for their gifts. The health of the Goodman family was drunk. | GOODMAN, William "Bill" (I2456)

A concert for the benefit of Mrs Delgaty and family will be given at Kaitangata this evening. The programme, which will be found in our advertising columns, possesses merits that should secure a full attendance. Mr Delgaty was well known to many in Balclutha and Kaitangata and throughout the Clutha district, and we are sure his old acquaintances will only be too glad to do what is in their power to make the concert successful in a pecuniary point of view. Regarding Balclutha we would point out that on many occasions the good people of Kaitangata have arranged for special trains to enable them to patronise similar entertainments in Balclutha. We have an opportunity of returning the compliment to-night. A special train will leave here at 6 30 p.m. returning at the close of the concert. There is thus no excuse left for non-attendance, and we hope to see both the train and the hall crowded.
The Concert in Gray's Hall, Kaitangata, on Friday evening, 1st inst., for the benefit of Mrs Delgaty, was a complete success in every respect. The purpose for which it was got up was praiseworthy in the extreme, and we were glad to see the public responded in a manner worthy of the occasion. Mr William Shore occupied the chair, and briefly, but feelingly, alluded to the object which had called them together that evening. He said he was glad to see such a large attendance for such a laudable purpose, but from the first time the question of the concert had been mooted, he had little doubt of the result, knowing the generous and sympathising hearts of the people of the district. He concluded by reading a letter of thanks from Mrs Delgaty, which he very truly observed spoke far more eloquently to them than any of the stereotyped phrases commonly used by Chairmen on similar occasions. He wished to thank them one and all for their attendance, and felt quite sure the pleasure the performers felt in giving their service was equalled by that of the audience in giving their assistance to such a benevolent object as the one that had called them together that evening. The programme was then gone through in first-class style, both vocal and instrumental. The usual votes of thanks to the performers, and the Chairman, brought the Concert to a close. A dance followed, which was patronised by old and young till an early hour the following morning, The proceeds amounted to L31. | CASSIDY, Annie (I8343)
