    • Obituary
      MR. W. C. MANTEUFEL
LOWER TENT HILL, June 28.-A well known and highly respected resident of Woodlands, Mr. William Christian Freidrich Manteufel, passed away recently in the Gatton private hospital after a short illness.
He was born in Prussia, Germany, and had reached the age of 73 years and 8 months. At the age of eight years he migrated to Queensland with his parents. The family first took up residence at Plainland, but later selected land at Woodlands. At this time water for drinking purposes had to be carried from a dam 21 miles distant and as it was muddy, had to be clarified, before it could be used.
The late Mr. Manteufel, as a young man, selected land in the district and with hard work and many sacrifices, carved out a prosperous home from the dense scrub. Later he held the record for a number of years for producing the highest yield of seed cotton per acre in the State.
He married Miss Minnie Schafferius, of Ropeley. He was an active and devoted member of the Ropeley Lutheran Church. He took an optimistic view on life and will be long remembered for his cheerful disposition and his willingness to assist in any capacity for the benefit of the district. He was a member of Tent Hill School of Arts Committee and a director and caretaker of the Tent Hill Dip Company. There were eight children of the marriage. One son died before him. He leaves his widow, three sons, Messrs. Fred (Woodlands), Eric (Blenheim), Herbert (Bald Knob), and four daughters Mesdames H. Wilks (Woodford), G. Stieler (Laidley), G. Strong (Mondure), and W. Jahnke (Helidon). He also leaves one brother, Mr. H. Manteufel (Gatton), one sister, Mrs. Walters (lpswich), three step-sisters, Mesadames H. Taylor (Harrisville), F. Natalier (Upper Tent Hill), and Fred Schiewe (Plainland). Two step-brothers, Messrs. Otto and Emil Manteufel, and two sisters, Mrs. G. Walters (Ipswich) and Mrs.W. Krenske (Ropeley) died before him. There are 18 grandchildren.
The funeral took place to the Ropeley Lutheran Cemetery after services in the church and at the graveside, conducted by Pastor Koehler.
