YANKS' CALL PUT DIGGER ON SCENT

SUSPICION, like a bad reputation, is easily come by. And when Toowoomba soldier, Edgar Allen Teis, awakening early at his home one morning, found his wife and a Yank asleep in his lounge room, he had plenty of reason to go around with a preoccupied air and furrowed brow, even though he had found the two ensconced on different couches. But he organised a surprise attack a few nights later, and that was another story!

Edgar and a cobber on that occasion, found Mrs. T. and the Yank, one Cecil Petrie, again in a room together, and the two soldiers saw quite a lot before breaking in on the guilty pair.

RETURNING to the house a few days later, Teis was confronted by his 16-year-old daughter with a plea that he sign his consent to her marriage. This he did, and the child is now the wife of another Yank.

All this Edgar revealed to the Chief Justice, Sir William Webb, in the Divorce Court during the week when he was granted a permanent leave ticket from his wife, while cuddling Cecil must foot the bill of costs.

Mr. J. F. Lynam (for Teis) How long were you happy together?-- The first thing that went wrong was about four years ago when we were at Blackbutt Creek. She ran away to Ipswich with a man, but came back in a week. She's been going out with other men ever since.

      "YANKS OUTSIDE"

Teis joined the A.M.F. in 1941, and did not return to his Toowoomba home until October, 1943.

"My wife was alone when I arrived," he said. "That evening, while I was talking to my wife, a girl named Stella bowled into the kitchen. She did not see me at first, and said to my wife: 'There are a couple of Yanks outside.' The wife nodded and winked at the girl, who did not seem to understand. She went out and came in with two American soldiers. She introduced them, and one was named Cecil Petrie. They stayed a while, then went away, and returned after tea, staying until it was time to go back to camp.

On October 25 the soldier brought a mate, Driver William Matthew Maher, home with him about 10 p.m. They did not go into the house, but entered the yard next door and crept through the palings to the side of the house.

"We looked through the partly opened window, and I saw my wife and Cecil Petrie kissing and cuddling on the bed. A while later I said to Maher, 'We'd better go in now.'

"We climbed through the back window and when we got in the Yank and my wife got up and came out to the kitchen. Petrie admitted he had been in bed with my wife and had committed adultery."

Teis then told his wife's seducer he was going to take proceedings for divorce, and Petrie wrote out for him his name, address, and serial number. "I kissed the two little children, and left then," added the husband.

      16-YEAR-OLD BRIDE

Mr. Lynam: When did you go out to the place, again?-- On November 2 1 went to the fence and called my eldest daughter to get one of my suits. She brought it out, and then brought me a marriage consent paper to sign. I signed it, and she is married now.
      How old is she?-- 16.
The Chief Justice: Whom did she marry?-- An American.

After Driver Maher had corroborated the vital features of his cobber's story His Honor granted Teis a decree nisi for divorce, and an order for costs against Petrie.

Custody of the children under age was opposed by his wife's solicitor, Mr. John Casey, and this matter was adjourned to chambers.
