      Late Mr. John Poole
RODE FROM FERNVALE TO SELL BUTTER
FERNVALE, Dec. 28.--The passing of a well-known Fernvale resident, Mr. John Poole, recently removed a link with a pioneering family which was well-known in Ipswich and district. The late Mr. Poole took a keen interest in public affairs.

He was born at Redbank Plains in 1866, being the eldest son in a family of four boys and four girls whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Shortly Poole, were from England. The father was from Coventry and the mother from Somerset, and they were married in Ipswich (Queensland).

The family's first home was constructed of very rough timber and roofed with thatch made of dried blady grass and tied on like shingles with rope made from the same kind of grass. This roof afforded complete protection from rain, but later was replaced by split wooden shingles. The floor of the house was of antbed.

      RODE TO IPSWICH WITH BUTTER.

When the family lived in the Fernvale district, John (the eldest boy) would leave on horseback about 3 a.m. with two cans of butter in saddle bags to reach Ipswich before the heat of the day. The butter would be sold here for 4d. a lb. During the very hot months cheese would be made instead of butter.

In later years John worked for wages in various occupations throughout the district, eventually purchasing property and becoming very successful in business - farming, dairying, butchering, and grazing. He was chairman of the State school committee for a number of years, trustee and secretary of the Fernvale General Cemetery Trust, a member of the Esk Shire Council for 28 years, and was the oldest member of the Western Star Lodge, G.U.O.O.F. He first joined the Rose of Fernvale Lodge on October 4, 1884.

He was an active member of the Methodist Church for some years, being for some time senior circuit steward in the Lowood circuit, in addition to being a local preacher, church steward, and trustee of the Fernvale Church. He was a Justice of the Peace, and a consistent supporter of the various outside activities of the church.

The late Mr. Poole's family consisted of six sons and five daughters. Eight were the children of his first wife, formerly Miss Amelia Mocker, of Fairney View, who predeceased him by about 21 years. In 1931 he married Miss J. L. Clarkson, of Warwick, who, with one daughter (Joan), and one son (Stewart) still resides at the Fernvale home.

The Fernvale Methodist Church was filled for the funeral service conducted by Rev. J. Gunders, of Lowood, and a very large and representative gathering assembled at the Fernvale Cemetery where a service also was conducted by Mr. Gunders, assisted by a member of the Western Star (Ipswich) Lodge.
