      Birthday Party at Back Plain.
      (From Our Minden Correspondent.)
In response to invitations issued, a happy gathering assembled, last Saturday night, at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Fred. Herrmann, of Back Plain, for the occasion to celebrate Mrs. Herrmann's birthday. At about 8 p.m. the party were entertained in the spacious kitchen, which was decorated with flowers, foliage, &c. The tables were heavily laden with choice edibles, and in the centre was a beautifully-ornamented three-tier birthday cake, a work of art, which reflected great credit upon the maker, Mrs. Herman Wruck, a sister of Mrs. Herrmann. Mr. H. Frohloff presided, and, in a brief and felicitous speech, on behalf of the company, tendered many thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Fred. Herrmann for their kind invitation. He wished Mrs. Herrmarn long life and prosperity and many happy returns of the day, and called upon the company to charge their glasses and drink her health, which was done with musical honours, and "Hoch soll sie leben." An adjournment was then made to the dancing-room, which was also very tastefully decorated. Excellent music was provided by Mr. H. Qualischeflki (accordeon), and Mr. A. Kerle fulfilled the duties of master of ceremonies very creditably. Card-playing and other amusements were also indulged in, and, at intervals, the following items were contributed: Comic German song, Mr. A. Wenck, "Der boor in der vesta straht;" song by Mr. A. Lehmann, "When I was sitting at my window last evening;" recitation by Mr. A. Wenck, "The Blue Hen;" recitation by Mr. H. Frohloff, "Die lange Wertel;" and recitation by Mr. A. Wenck, "The man with a single hair." There was also a waltzing competition for a prize, donated by Mr. Otto Millewski. About five couple competed in this event, which was won by Mr. Henry Ballin and Miss Lizzie Hollwarth. At midnight another repast was partaken of, after which the amusements were resumed, and continued merrily until the small hours of the morning, when after having thanked Mr. and Mrs. Fred. Herrmann, all returned to their respective homes. Mrs. Herrmann was in receipt of many very choice presents, including several cheques, as follows:-Mr. and Mrs. W. Zable, cheque; Mr. and Mrs. E. L. A. Beduhn, lamp; Miss Annie Beduhn, fruit-dish; Miss Sylvia Wenck, birthday card; Mr. and Mrs. John Kissling, lamp; Mrs. E. Dennien (mother of Mrs. Fred.
