    • BOWEN NOTES
      BOWEN, April 15.
Another death affecting Bowen was that of Mrs. Anne Beatson, an old resident of Maryborough. The late Mrs. Beatson was 91 years of age. Mrs. Beatson was the first lady J.P. in Maryborough. One of her sons is a well-known Bowenite, Mr. Andy Beatson. Another son, George, lives in Maryborough, and Tom in Brisbane. She is also survived by one daughter, Mrs. Wallace, who lives in Adelaide. To all the above relatives we extend full sympathy.

    • PIONEER WHO BECAME J.P. AT 83
A woman who became a Justice of the Peace at 83 died at Maryborough a few days ago. She was Mrs. Annie Beatson, and until her death at nearly 92 she had vivid recollections of life in old Brisbane.
Arriving with her parents from County Clare, Ireland, in the sailing ship, John Fielding, in 1853, she made her first home in a cottage where the old Courier Building stands, at the corner of Queen and Edward streets. Later the family removed to a lane between His Majesty's Hotel and the British Empire Hotel.
Standing at her door in Queen Street she saw an aboriginal, Dundarry, hanged at the site of the General Post Office.
She could tell of horseracing on the original course at New Farm; the first Test cricket match in Queensland, played near the Roma Street railway yards: convicts building Boundary Street; Gregory Terrace and Victoria Park as aboriginal camps; and Queen Street itself as a bullock track; Creek Street was a gully through which ran water from the lagoon that is now the site of the City Hall.
When King George and Queen Elizabeth visited Queensland as Duke and Duchess of York in 1927, Mr. Forgan Smith, then Acting Premier, presented Mrs. Beatson as a representative of the pioneers. Their Majesties were most interested in her anecdotes of early days.
She is survived by three sons, Messrs. Andrew Beatson (Bowen), George Beatson (Maryborough), and D. T. Beatson (Brisbane), and a daughter, Mrs. J. H. Wallace (Adelaide).
