      MR. J. F. STEFFENS.

There passed away about half-past 10 p.m. on the 10th instant, at the residence of Mr. C. Rosenblat [second wife's son-in-law], Mondure Estate, a very old identity of the Lockyer district in the person of Mr. Johan Friederich Steffens, at the ripe age of 71 years and 2 months. The deceased was in apparently good health up to within half-an-hour before death took place, the cause of his demise being heart-failure. The late Mr. Steffens was born in Orsdorf-Holstein, Germany, on the 11th of August, 1839. In 1864, he came to Queensland in the ship Zusana Gutte Frau [Susanne Godeffroy], and on arrival here took up his residence in the Roma district, where he lived for about 12 months. He then removed to Fairney View, where he resided until 1879, when he took up his abode in the Lockyer district, where he practically resided until death removed him. The deceased was married twice, his first wife having predeceased him some 11 years ago. There were 12 children (eight sons and four daughters) as issue of the first marriage, one of the sons having died about 13 years ago, The surviving sons of the family are :--Mr. J. A. Steffens (Lake Clarendon), Mr. F. Steffens (College View), Mr. H. Steffens (Plainland), Messrs. O. Steffens and C. Steffens (Toogoolawah), and Mr. W. Steffens (Taabinga), all of whom are married with the exception of the latter son. The names of the deceased['s] daughters are:--Mrs. G. Whiteway (Glenore Grove), Mrs. A. Pomeranke (Blenheim), Mrs. A. Zarnke (Warra), and Miss Berta Steffens (Toowoomba). One daughter (Miss Martha Steffens), of Plainland was she result of the second marriage. The deceased left one brother (Mr. J. J. H. Steffens of Lake Clarendon, and [unreadable... ... ...] J. Wilkin, of Roadvale), to mourn his loss. There are 33 grandchildren. The remains of the deceased were conveyed to Hatton Vale, where the interment took place on the 12th instant, the funeral cortege, considering the short notice, being a very large one. Pastor M. M. Millat, of Hatton Vale, read the burial service.
