THE LATE MRS. J. W. SCHAFFERIUS
As recorded in your local columns on Tuesday last there passed away, at the Lutheran parsonage, Ipswich, at 11 o'clock on Monday evening, the 27th July, a very highly-respected resident of Plainland, in the person of Mrs. Schafferius, wife of Mr. J. W. Schafferius. The deceased had been suffering for a considerable time, but had only thought it necessary to seek medical care during the past three months. She had been under treatment here prior to being removed to the Ipswich Hospital about five weeks ago. After treatment at that institution for three weeks, she expressed a wish to be taken to the Lutheran parsonage, where she was under the medical care of Drs. W. H. Von Lossberg and E. E. Brown. Her husband and Miss M. Schafferius were also in close attendance during the last fortnight of her illness. Everything that was possible was done to alleviate her sufferings, but it proved to be futile, and she passed peacefully away, as stated above, in the presence of her husband, daughter, and Mrs. W. Zarnke (deceased's sister), the immediate cause of death being valvular disease of the heart. Deceased was a native of Munchhausen, Germany, and came to Queensland with her parents about 25 years ago, settling in Toowoomba. The family, however, resided there for only 12 months, when they came to Hatton Vale, and engaged in farming. Deceased was married on the 18th February, 1887, to Mr. Schafferius. in the Plainland Lutheran Church by Pastor J. Gossling. Mr. and Mrs. Schafferius made their home at Ropeley, near Gatton, for about five years, eventually settling down at Plainland, where they had resided for the past 16 or 17 years. Deceased was at the time of her death 37 years and eight months old, and leaves behind her a sorrowing widower and a family of 13 healthy-looking children (eight girls and five boys), the eldest being nearly 20 years and the youngest only four months. Mrs. Schafferius was of a kindly disposition, and was highly respected by everyone in the district, as was testified to by the large number of mourners at the funeral. For the past 10 years deceased had been a prominent figure at the annual picnics of the Plainland State School, Mr. Schafferius being chairman of the school committee at the present time. The body was conveyed to Laidley from Ipswich by the midday goods train on Tuesday, and brought to deceased's late residence at Plainland, from which the funeral moved at half-past 10 o'clock on the following morning for the Plainland Cemetery. The cortege was one of the largest ever seen in the district, there being between 70 and 80 vehicles in the procession, besides a number of horsemen. As a mark of respect the school children, with their head-teacher (Mr. A. W. M. Don) met the procession near the school, and marched in front of the hearse to the cemetery. In response to the last request of the deceased, the rites at the graveside were performed by Pastor H. Wallat, of the Lutheran Church, Ipswich. Deceased was a sister of Mrs. V. Born, of Glenore Grove, Mrs. H. Zarnke, of Prenzlau, Mrs. W. Zarnke, of Blenheim, and Mr. Kasper Funk, of Hatton Vale, and has besides a number of relatives in the Downs district. The greatest sympathy has been extended to Mr. Schafferius and his family in their irreparable loss.
