    • ANOTHER PIONEER PASSED AWAY.

DEATH OF MR R. PATTIE, Senr.

A large number of our readers will learn with regret that Mr Robert Pattie, senr.. died at his residence, Riwaka, on Monday evening last. Mr Pattie was born in the Parish of St. Andrews, Scotland, in October 1820, and was therefore in his 81st year. He arrived in the Colony, with his wife and one child, by the ship Lady Nugent in 1849, in the fullness of manhood and strength. Trained from his youth to agricultural pursuits, he came to the Colony with a ripe knowledge pertaining to all matters connected with the cultivation of the soil and the rearing of stock. His first experience in his adopted country was a short residence in the Wairau, the then great sheep breeding district of the province, but shortly afterwards he was appointed by the late Mr Samuel Stephens to manage his estate at Riwaka, which he did successfully for two or three years, when he purchased a farm in the locality, and has been recognised ever since as one of the most advanced and intelligent agriculturists in the district, Mr Pattie always displayed much interest in local affairs, and he represented Riwaka in the County Council for an unbroken period of 18 years, when failing health compelled him to decline re-election. As a member of the County Council, he was well known, and he served his constituents with much earnestness and honesty of purpose. A severe and painful internal seizure compelled him, some six months ago, to relinquish various public offices which he held, and for some months he suffered extreme pain, though latterly this abated, and he passed away painlessly in sleep. Till the very last he retained one office, that of Corresponding Secretary to the Oddfellows, an office he held for 31 years, while at the time of his death he had been a leading member of that Order for 47 years. He was also one of the oldest Justices of the Peace for the Colony. Mr Pattie leaves a widow and eight children-- three daughters and five sons--, all married with the exception of Mr John Pattie, who is stationed at Manilla, as an officer of the Eastern Extension Telegraph Company. There are 22 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and with the bereaved there will be general sympathy. The funeral will take place on Thursday, when the deceased will be buried in the Riwaka Cemetery, the procession leaving his late residence at two o'clock in the afternoon. Thus do our fathers and pioneers pass from our sight, but the late Mr Robert Pattie will long be remembered as a kind and considerate neighbor, an able agriculturist, and an amiable gentleman.

    • THE CLOSING SCENE. -- The remains of the late Mr R. Pattie, Riwaka, were committed to the dust of the local cemetery on Thursday. A very large attendance testified to the high esteem in which the deceased gentleman was held. The cortege extended over a quarter of a mile. The Oddfellows were present in strength and representative members from four Lodges, Takaka, Dovedale, Motueka and Riwaka, acted as pallbearers. The Rev. James H. MacKenzie, Nelson, conducted the funeral services in the home and at the cemetery according to the Presbyterian form, and Mr E. Hursthouse, Mayor of Motueka, read also at the grave the ritual of the Oddfellows' Society. Far from his loved St. Andrew's he has found a place of rest, but sunshine filled the grave in which his body was laid, and everyone felt that a wise counsellor and a trusty friend had passed away.
