      MR. ARCHIBALD SPENCE

CHILDERS. July 29.-- After having suffered an illness extending over a period of seven months, Mr. Archibald Spence passed away in the Isis Hospital yesterday morning. This news occasioned expressions of genuine regret throughout the Isis district where Mr. Spence was well known and highly esteemed as a most exemplary citizen. The deceased gentleman was born at Glasgow in 1878 and came Queensland with his parents in 1888. He secured employment at the C.S.R. Company's Childers mill in 1901 as storeman and timekeeper, a position which he held until 1934 when the company finally severed its association with the Isis, and deceased was transferred to Hambledon Mill. Following the death of his wife in 1935 he retired from the company's service and in 1936 took up a similar position at the Tully Mill where he remained until ill-health compelled him to resign about three months ago. A man of lofty ideals and sterling principles the late Mr. Spence took a keen interest in the welfare of his fellow citizens, and his personal charm endeared him to all those with whom he came in contact. He was a prominent figure in all movements of importance to the community surrounding the Childers mill and Apple Tree Creek near by, and performed valued service during the Great War as an organiser and spokesman in the patriotic movement. The high standard of the Childers mill reading room also revealed his keen interest and administrative ability. His social and welfare work for over 20 years at the mill earned for him a splendid reputation for earnestness and sincerity. The late Mr. Spence was married 40 years ago to Miss Mary Jane Barnes, a member of a well-known Isis family, who pre-deceased him by five years. The members of the family who survive are Mesdames K. Swanborough (South Isis), H. Armour (Ingham), R. Stehbens (Childers) and Mr. Walter Spence (Harwood, Clarence River, New South Wales).
