      Obituary

      MR. MATTHEW AHERN

The death occurred at his residence in Canning-street yesterday afternoon, following an illness extending over a period of about two years, of Mr. Matthew Ahern, well-known and highly-respected resident of Warwick. Deceased is survived by his widow and family of three sons (Messrs. J. W. Ahern, manager of the Commonwealth Bank, Gunnedah, N.S.W.; Matthew, Warwick; and Thomas, Toowoomba) and one daughter (Mrs. J. J. Healy). The funeral will leave St. Mary's Church at 3 o'clock this afternoon for the Warwick Cemetery. Mr. Ahern would have celebrated his 78th. birthday this month.

The late Mr. Ahern was born in Warwick, where he received his early education. When 10 years old the family moved to Stanthorpe, where his father had transferred with the discovery of tin in that area. At the age of 15 he entered the butchering trade with which he remained connected for the whole of his working life. He was first employed by the late Mr. Denis Quinlan, and after four years in his employ obtained a position with the late Mr. Dan Sheehan, another Stanthorpe butcher. When 24 years of age Mr. Ahern returned to Warwick and entered the employ of the late Mr. William Collins as a slaughterman. At that time Mr. Collins conducted a butchering business in Guy-street, and Mr. Ahern worked as his slaughterman for 11 years. After severing his connection with Mr. Collins, deceased was engaged by Messrs. Chandler and Smith, who carried on business in Fitzroy-street. When that partnership ended Mr. Ahern, with Mr. Smith and Mr. Jack Collins, purchased the late Mr. Wm. Collins' business in Guy-street and also opened a shop in Palmerin-street, Mr. Ahern looking after the Palmerin-street business. This partnership lasted for about three years, when the firm sold its interests to Mr. Mark Betts and Mr. Ahern returned to work as an employee of Mr. Charles Brunckhorst, who conducted business in premises opposite the Town Hall. Here Mr. Ahern remained until the business was disposed of to Mr. Betts soon after the outbreak of the first world war, after which Mr. Ahern commenced business in King-street a few hundred yards from the site of the present shop conducted by his son Matt and Mr. P. O'Grady. Mr. Ahern remained associated with this business until his retirement about four years ago.
