Cause: Accidental rifle wound to the head
    • A sad shooting fatality occurred this morning (our Gympie correspondent advised last night), when Gertrude Spiller, a young woman, 20 years of age, a daughter of Councillor Cornelius Spiller, of the Widgee Shire Council, met her death through the accidental explosion of a loaded rifle at her father's residence, Chatsworth. Miss Spiller, pursuing her domestic duties was engaged sweeping out her brother's bedroom, and in doing so was removing a rifle that lay under the bed. She had grasped the rifle by the muzzle, and when drawing it away it is surmised the hammer must have caught, and on being released fell, thus firing the rifle. The bullet entered the right side of the head, and the unfortunate girl died within 40 minutes. The rifle had been jammed, and the young man had placed it, as he thought, out of the way until such time as he could attend to it. The greatest sympathy is expressed with Councillor and Mrs Spiller in their sudden bereavement.
