    • Fatal Accident.
      DISTRESSING AFFAIR.
      FAMILY IN POOR CIRCUMSTANCES
A most distressing fatality (writes our Esk correspondent) occurred in this centre late on Friday night, resulting in the death of a well-known resident of Mount Beppo, Mr. Hermann Pagel. From information received it appeared that the deceased left Mount Beppo on Friday morning , and came into Esk on business. He was in town all day, and visited various business places, transacting business at each, leaving Esk about 7 or 8 p.m. on his return journey. Nothing more was seen of him, but about 10.30 p.m. Mr. J. Adlam, who had been out for a drive along the Toogoolawah-road, informed Const. Dowling that a man had been thrown from his horse near Gullananie Bridge, and that he was badly injured. He also stated that the man never spoke, but was still breathing, his horse, also injured, was lying alongside him. Mr. Adlam took the saddle off the horse, a stirrup-iron being bent up. The animal got up, and limped, away, having damaged one of its shoulders. Const. Dowling at once informed Sergt. Quain, who summoned Dr. Elworthy, and they set out for the scene of the accident. After searching about the neighbourhood for a couple of hours they failed to find any trace of the man, and returned to Mr. Alex Smith's residence, where they got in communication with Fearron's hotel, where Mr. Adlam was staying. After receiving further information as to the locality where Mr. Adlam stated the man was seen by him, a further search was made, but without avail, and they returned to Esk, but not before they were drenched to the skin, having been caught in the terrific storm that passed over Esk. Const. Dowling, too, was out searching, and he also got the full force of the storm. Mr. Warner, a resident of Toogoolawah, who had passed by, and had also seen the injured man, informed Const. Raynor of the affair on his arrival at Toogoolawah. The constable set out, and about 6 a.m. to-day (Saturday) found the man lying on the road-side between Mr. Cock's and Mr. Chaillie's residences-over a mile and a half from the spot which it is said Mr. Adlam described to the sergeant as the place where the man was lying. This accounts for the sergeant and doctor not being able to find the body. It was brought into Esk, and lodged at the Police Court, where Dr. Elworthy held a post-mortem examination, and certified that deceased's neck was broken. His widow and family were informed of the accident, and they came into Esk this (Saturday) morning. As they drove into the court-yard in a German waggon, the party, consisting of the mother and nine little children-the youngest being 12 months old-the scene was one which would have moved a heart of stone, the distracted mother and children all sobbing bitterly. The deceased was 45 years of age, and had been working for Mr. Linke at Mount Beppo. His father lives at Lowood, and his brother (Mr. C. Pagel) at Tarampa. The mother and children are left without a home, and are in very poor circumstances. The sad affair, together with the distressing circumstances, has been a general topic of conversation in Esk to-day.
The funeral of Mr. Pagel took place on Saturday afternoon, when the remains were interred in the Esk Cemetery. A touching incident took place at the graveside. When the body was being lowered into the grave one of the dead man's little daughters, who was sobbing bitterly, said, "I want to go into the hole with daddy, too."
