Petrol In Tank Explodes OXENFORD~TRAGEDY SOUTHPORT, March 3.

When the petrol in the tank of a motor car caught fire and exploded at Oxenford last night, William Edward Schultz (30), the driver of the car, was sprayed with the burning liquid, and his clothing was burned from his body. Schultz suffered severe burns, and died in the Brisbane Hospital early yesterday morning. Intending to spend an evening at the pictures, the party, which included Mr. Schultz, Miss Louisa Goll, to whom Schultz recently became engaged, Miss Rebecca Goll, and Mr. Walter Goll, left Upper Coomera shortly before 8 o'clock. They called at Harms's Store, at the corner of the Oxenford-Guanaba road and the Pacific Highway, at Oxenford, to fill up the petrol tank. The car, an old model, with the petrol tank in front, was pulled up alongside the bowser, and the refuelling was in progress when the front part of the car burst into flames. The occupants got out, and the car was pushed to the other side of the road, away from the bowser.
      PETROL EXPLODES
Schultz removed the cushions, and was disconnecting the battery when the petrol in the tank exploded, covering him with burning liquid. Finally he rolled in the long paspalum grass, and the flames were extinguished, but not before his clothing was burned from his body. Mrs. Eric Hodge, who lives near by, brought a sheet and blanket, and the injured man was made as comfortable as possible until the arrival of the ambulance car. The 10 miles from Southport was covered in 10 minutes.
Superintendent Raby attended to Schultz and Louisa and Rebecca Goll, who were splashed by the burning petrol.
The three injured were taken to a Southport private hospital and later transferred to the Brisbane General Hospital.
Schultz, whose parents reside at Wondai, had been in the Upper Coomera district for some time.

    • FATAL BURNS FROM BLAZING CAR

Inquest on Oxenford Tragedy SOUTHPORT, May 29.

The story of a fire in the engine of a motor car at Oxenford on March 2, causing the death of the driver and in juries to two passengers, was told today, when the Coroner (Mr. J. F. McCoy) resumed the inquest into the death of William Edward Schultz, which occurred in the Brisbane General Hospital on March 3. Sergeant H. W. Scott examined the witnesses.
Wilhelm Harms, of Oxenford, said that deceased came to his shop about 7.50 p.m. on March 2, and asked for two gallons of petrol. After about one gallon had run into the tank it overflowed, and the petrol splashed over the engine and on to the ground. The deceased gave a half turn with the crank handle. Witness noticed flames on the ground under the car, and the engine caught fire. The car was pushed across the road, and the deceased tried to get the battery which was under the front seat, and just behind the petrol tank.
Witness went into his shop, and almost immediately heard a loud explosion. Rushing outside he saw the deceased's clothes blazing fiercely. The flames were extinguished by placing him on the grass and throwing blankets over him.
Constable William John Cronau, of Coomera, said that when he arrived a few minutes after the fire, the deceased's clothes had been practically burnt off his body, which was severely scorched.
A tree close to where the car had been standing was scorched 30 to 40 feet in the air. He was of the opinion that when the car was cranked it caused a spark which ignited the petrol spilt over the engine. He also believed that the deceased received his fatal injuries through endeavouring to get the battery from under the front seat of the burning car. He was satisfied that there was nothing suspicious in the accident.
The inquest was readjourned to Brisbane.
