    • The Late Mr George Olive.

Mr. George Olive, whose death was referred to recently as having occurred in Sydney on the 13th instant, came to the district in 1842 as one of the party of drovers bringing 500 head of cattle for Messrs. A. and W. Busby of Cassilis Station. There was a drought at the time, and water was very scarce on the Castlereagh River. The cattle were in very low condition as were also the sheep. The trip occupied five months, and the party landed about 300 cattle and 2750 sheep on the squatterage now known as Busby's flat. After remaining there for three months the stock were removed to what is now known as Tuckombil, near Woodburn, where deceased had the situation of stockman. While there he and James McClerkin, being the only two Europeans there at the time, were attacked by a large party of aboriginals just at break of day, sad it was due to having a loft in the house that the two were able to beat off the attackers, aided by their firearms, of which the blacks had got to have a wholesome fear. Mr. Olive had a good knowledge of the early settlement of the district, and about two years ago contributed a short article to the 'Star,' relating many interesting incidents. His brother, the late Mr. William Olive, also came to the district shortly after his brother. Mr. George Olive married a daughter of Mr. George Robinson, and left, as we stated last issue, a numerous family. He had a hotel for a time near the Junction at Grafton, and some years later selected at Myall Greek on the Casino-Lawrence Road, where he had an accommodation house, and ran the Casino-Lawrence mail. Latterly he has resided with a married daughter in Sydney. He was one of the few men left of the very early pioneers, who saw the district before European settlement had made its changes on the face of the land. To the last he had a strong attachment for the Richmond, where he had lived so long and tasted the rough experiences of pioneering. He was a great lover of horses, and in his time owned some good animals.
