    • Swam 300 Yards When Launch Sinks

After firing three shots as a distress signal before his power launch Claire sank in the town reach of the Fitzroy River near the racecourse on Wednesday night, Clement Leslie Wenck, a fisherman, of Yeppoon, swam 300 yards to safety.

Police, after hearing the shots, discovered that the Claire was missing from its moorings, and an all-night search for Wenck was organised. He reported to the police yesterday morning. Wenck lived alone on the boat.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on Wednesday the boat dragged its anchor and the stern stopped against a tree trunk. The current produced a list and though he transferred equipment to the opposite side he could not stop the boat listing. Wenck then fired three shots from a .303 rifle as a distress signal. A surge of water swamped the boat, which quickly sank.

He lost his boat, valued at 120, his fishing equipment and his personal effects.

      [Second report]

      Fired gun for rescue

ROCKHAMPTON (by telephone) -- A Yeppoon fisherman, Clement Leslie Wenck, had to swim for his life in the flooded Fitzroy River when his boat swamped and sank. At 9.30 pm on Thursday, Wenck fired three shots in quick succession from his .303 rifle to signal distress when his launch, Claire, began to founder. Wenck swam 300 yards to safety near the Callaghan Park racecourse. Police searched until early yesterday morning.
