    • EVANDALE.
      An old and much-esteemed resident, in the person of Mr. Joseph Atkins, passed peacefully away on Thursday night at the age of 78 years. Deceased had been a resident of the district for many years. Of a quiet and unassuming disposition, he was liked and respected by all who knew him. He was a prominent member of, and a hard worker for, the Methodist Church. The funeral took place on Saturday, and was well attended. The remains were laid in the Presbyterian Cemetery, the funeral service being conducted by the Revs. B. W. Heath (Methodist), and J. Russell (Presbyterian).

    • RIANA

      A wire was received on Friday to the effect that Mr Joseph Atkins has passed away at his residence at Evandale, at the ripe old age of 78 years. The old gentleman, during his stay at Riana, made many friends, and took a great interest in the erection and opening of the Methodist Church, of which he had been a member for over sixty years, being a local preacher for forty years. He leaves a grown-up family- two sons at Evandale, one at Longford, and one in Launceston, one daughter at Scottsdale, one at Launceston, one at Westbury, and one at Riana, all of whom are married. There is also a large number of grandchildren, and one great grandchild.

    Notes 
    • Joseph and Mary (Nee King) Atkins arrived on the ship "Fortune" in 1857 with their five children. Joseph was a labourer working for James Cox of "Clarendon and Strathmore". By 1877, Joseph was issued a licence to be a carrier (Licence No 1543). At that time, he was leasing 40 acres and a house in Russell St, Evandale. One of his sons, Enos Eli Atkins, was a General Produce Dealer of Evandale. He was known all over the northern parts of Tasmania as a buyer of wattle bark and agricultural produce. He was a member of the Wesleyan Church and President of the local Christian Endeavour Society. Joseph died on 11 Aug 1926 [ no - 1904, son Enos died 1926__J.Crockett] and Mary died on 21 Apr 1884.
