    Notes
    • Daphney Bridgland was born in Brisbane where she attended Clayfield College and the Commercial High School. She did clerical and secretarial work during the war and afterwards in her father's office. During this time Daphney was also a Miss Australia candidate. However, her first love was singing and in 1946 she was auditioned by Marjorie Lawrence, who suggested she should study in Italy. This was beyond the family's financial resources and instead Daphney spent three years at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. She had two opera seasons with the Victorian National Opera Company before Leon, the brother of a Brisbane friend, and a former sweetheart, came to Melbourne:

We met again after all this time and he asked me to marry him. So I decided this was what I wanted to do. It would have taken a great deal more money than we had for me to go and do what I needed to do to become a professional singer.

Leon had a degree in agricultural science and worked with the then Department of Agriculture, Stock and Fisheries in Papua New Guinea. In September 1950 Daphney arrived at Sogeri near Port Moresby where Leon was lecturing agricultural graduates. In 1952 the couple moved to Keravat, near Rabaul, where Leon supervised the Lowlands Agricultural Experimental Station. Daphne spent the rest of her time in New Guinea in the Rabaul area. Leon joined Theo Thomas and Company to run an agricultural advisory service in 1959. Several years later he also became manager of three of Theo Thomas's coconut and copra plantations, including the one at Rainau where the Bridglands lived. Ten years later the couple moved to Nonga, where they remained for two years, and then to Rabarua. Robyn, the Bridglands' first daughter, was born in Port Moresby in 195l. Ann was born in 1953 and Rosemary in 1950. Daphney Bridgland left New Guinea in 1983.
