    • ONE of Brisbane's last surviving "trammies", Ted Watt, died on February 26 aged 81 following a short illness.

Mr Watt, of Salisbury, was well known in the 1950s and 60s for his role as a conductor when trams still ran on the city's streets.

According to Logan solicitor and consumer advocate Tim O'Dwyer, Mr Watt spent 12 years punching tram tickets before being re-trained in 1969 to drive council buses a job he performed for 23 years until his retirement in 1992.

He said Mr Watt was known to be "always smiling, always witty" and a framed retirement plaque from the Brisbane City Council recorded 35 years of "dedication and worthy service" and a "commendable contribution to the well-being of the citizens of Brisbane".

Life-long friend Jennifer Pengelly fondly recalled a man of small stature with a big heart: "I have memories of Ted on the trams in town and on the buses when he would slow down and sing out a cheery hello or toot the horn as he passed by".

Mr Watt met wife Anne through the Christian Endeavour movement and they married in 1957.

Mr Watt is survived by Anne, his five children, seven grandchildren, five step grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild.
