Winifred Isabel Brighton was born at Nanango on the 5th December 1934.

She was the eighth child of Walter and Warril Fritz. The family moved to Murgon when she was a baby.

Her father had been crippled from a fall from a horse and as she was brought up as one of ten children on an invalid pension, her childhood was somewhat deprived. There was always plenty of food however, as her mother had a house cow and maintained a large vegetable garden.

Win grew up during the Second World War, so some food and clothes needed Ration Coupons as well as the money to purchase them.

She was educated at Murgon State School. She loved school but had to leave at 14 years of age to go to work as a Shop Assistant.

At 16 she married Clive Brighton and they moved to Byee where Clive worked at building the weir. Their daughter Kristine was born while there. They moved to Proston where two sons Gregory and Peter were born.

Win loved to sew and knit and made most of her children's clothes. Later knitting baby clothes and jumpers for grandchildren.

They tried share farming and when Kristine was twelve years old they moved to Melawondi near Gympie to work in the pineapples.

When the children grew up and went to Brisbane to work she went bean picking and grew beans and cucumbers with Clive.

She never liked living in the country and was overjoyed when she and Clive bought a house in Gympie.

Here she had a big garden and did some dressmaking. She added tapestry and crochet to her hand crafts.

She did volunteer work at the Cystic Fibrosis Op shop and Meals on Wheels.

In retirement she and Clive travelled over most of Australia by coach which they enjoyed, and they researched the Brighton family tree.

She was never happier than when she had a good book to read and loved Australian stories and poetry.
