    • THE LATE MR. WRUCK.
Quite a gloom was cast over this centre last Friday when the death of Mr. Henry August Frederich Wruck, of Hillside, became known. He was one of Queensland's oldest German pioneers, having been 37 years in the State. Deceased, who had reached the age of 68 years 6 months and 2 days, was born on the 10th December, 1839, in the Town Bublitz, Hinter Pomen, Germany, where he learned the trade of cabinet-maker, at which he was quite an expert. In the year 1860 he left that town and went to Berlin, where he was married to Miss Agusta Rojahn, the issue being nine sons and one daughter, of whom five sons are still alive and married-namely, Messrs. Carl Wruck (of Deep Creek), Albert Wruck, H. Wruck, and J. Wruck (Hillside), and Herman Wruck (Back Plain).

In the year 1871 the family sailed for Queensland in the sailing ship Langes Hagen, and had a very saddening voyage, as they lost one boy at the age of four years. Later on another boy, aged eight years, accidentally fell overboard and was drowned, 12 sailors, who tried to save him, also having a narrow escape from drowning.

In Brisbane Mr. Wruck commenced general work, but, finding that it did not suit him, he, with his family, came to Minden, and commenced farming. There they remained for three years, when they sold out and took up land at Hillside, where they resided for 26 years, and where, after hard toil, they made a beautiful home. About four years ago they sold this farm to one of their sons, and removed to another of their farms close by.

In the year 1896 Mr. Wruck built a large pipe-organ for the German Apostolic Church at Hatton Vale. It was a work of art, and was a credit to him.

Some years ago the deceased contracted severe rheumatism, but, despite this handicap, he continued to work hard, and battled through some hard times, such as floods, droughts, &c.. A short time ago some internal complaint set in, which grew worse from day to day until he was confined to bed. He bore his sufferings with great patience. Everything possible was done for him, but he passed away peacefully at 5 o'clock last Friday morning.

The remains of deceased, who was highly esteemed, and who had made friends far and wide, were laid to rest in the grave-yard of the Zion Lutheran Church at noon last Sunday, the cortege being the largest that has been seen in this centre for many years. It contained about 50 vehicles and some 70 equestrians. The Rev. J. Frank, who conducted a service in the house, officiated at the grave-side in a most impressive manner. Deceased leaves a widow, five sons, 16 grandchildren, and several sisters and brothers residing in Germany. The coffin was a very special and expensive one.
