The death of Mr Charles Partington, one of the most widely known and universally esteemed identities of the district, after a very short illness, came as a distinct shock to the community.
The deceased gentleman was born in Greensboroulgh in 1S63, and, according to the custom of that period, his school days were curtailed by an early entrance into the arena of work. Fruit and vegetable growing and wood carting to the city were the staple industries in those early days, and as quite a boy he became an adept with horses and at marketing. Endowed with a reflective and observant mind, a keen sense of humor and fluency of speech, his shrewd remarks on current affairs and humorous references to his early experiences were always a source of instruction and entertainment.
Robert Burns, with his cynical humour and frank philosophy of life, had a kindred spirit in the late Charles Partington, who, having a very retentive memory, delighted in extensively quoting Burns to emphasise his own views on matters political, economic or social. Another marked characteristic was that an opinion once pronounced was very tenaciously adhered to. Possessing shrewd business and accumulative instincts, he steadily translated his industry into comparative affluence.
Although often requested, he always declined to be nominated for municipal or political preferment. At the same time, his thoughtful criticisms relating to municipal or political anomalies were educative, although not always agreed with or acceptable to his hearers.
As an indication of the great respect felt for the deceased and family, an unusually large number of local residents on Sunday followed his remains to the place of interment, the Strathallan cemetery. Mrs. Partington predeceased her husband, as also did two daughters. The surviving members of the family are Mrs. Ivy Godber, Mrs. Doris Dawson, and Misses Winnie and Jean (Education Department). The Rev. A. H. Mitchell conducted the burial service.
