    • He enlisted in the army in Edinburgh, Scotland on 15 June 1815 and arrived in Sydney, Australia 18 August 1825 on the convict transport "Norfolk", commanded by Captain Alexander Greig, with 178 male prisoners; two having died on the passage. Guard consisted of 33 rank and file of the 57th regiment under orders of Lieutenant Brown. Sailed from Portsmouth 17 April 1825, a journey of 123 days.

      On 12 March 1831 he sailed for Madras, India on the "York" with his regiment. His wife and family travelled with him.
      The following is the '[Embarkation] Return' of a detachment of the 57th Regiment, to embark on board the ship York, on Saturday next [12 March], for Madras : Major R. Hunt, Captain J. Brown, lady, and family; Lieut. G. Edwards, Lieut. R. Alexander, Lieut. E. Lockyer, Paymaster G. H. Green, lady, and family ; 9 serjeants, 12 drummers, 7 corporals, 132 privates,  15 women, and 39 children.
