    • Obituary.

      MRS. McWILLIAM.

The death occurred at her residence Dungog, early on Thursday morning of Mrs. McWilliam, relict of the late Peter [should be Thomas] McWilliam, at the advanced age of 85 years. The deceased lady represented one of the most prominent families of early colonial history, her father having been a Major Lackeyer [sic] -- a well-known Australian name -- of the New South Wales corps. Mrs. McWilliam was born in the Paramatta barracks in October 1826, and was the first white child to see the light in that district. Moving in the highest military and gubernatorial circles of her day, the deceased lady came in contact with all the prominent figures of the early times, and gathered a mass of interesting information, that was of great interest in these later years when retailed as reminiscence. She married Peter McWilliam, a noted business man of 60 years ago, and shortly after this came with her husband to Dungog-- one of the first-- and soon became well-to-do, owning several valuable properties. These however, were afterwards lost, and only names on the early transfers mark the McWilliam interest in Dungog. The deceased lady was a most cultured woman, who moving in the high est circles of Sydney, and London of the early forties, cultivated a charming personality. Her later years were spent in Dungog in unfortunate circumstances that were relieved and brightened by the good offices of a wide circle of friends. Mrs. McWilliam leaves one son, Thomas, of Cangai, Grafton, who served through the South African war. Her remains are to be interred in the church of England portion of the local cemetery to-day.
