Death of an Old Colonist.
Mr. Charles Weeden Lockyer, who died at his residence, 21 Womerah Avenue, Darlinghurst, on March 28, was in his 78th year. Born at Weeden Barracks, Northamptonshire, he came to New South Wales with his parents, in the Royal Charlotte, when only 12 months old. He was the son of the late Major Edmund Lockyer, of the 57th Regiment, at one time Usher of the Black Rod in the N.S.W. Parliament. He was educated in King's School, Parramatta, and afterwards undertook the management of several stations, principally the properties of his father. One of these was "Lockyer's Lea," near Goulburn. This, the homestead of the late Major Lockyer, was named after the family. The late Mr. Lockyer was for a number of years an officer of H.M. Customs. On retirement, he volunteered his services in connection with the Maori war, serving three years under Colonel Hamilton. For his services he received a grant from the Crown of 50 acres of land and a silver medal. On returning to Sydney, he received an appointment in the Stamp Office, under Mr. Hemming, but on account of ill-health he was compelled to resign. He was twice married. By the first wife there were three sons, and by the second one son and four daughters, all of whom survive him. Mr. Nicholas Lockyer, Collector of Customs, is a brother of the deceased gentleman.
