    • DEATH OF AN OLD PIONEER.

In our last issue we briefly referred to the death of Mrs. Snodden, widow of the late Mr. Snodden, which occurred on Saturday evening last, at her residence, Newtown, Tumut. Deceased was possessed of a history which many of her acquaintances were not aware of, as she was of a retiring disposition, and spoke very little on matters concerning herself. She was the 5th daughter of the late Major Lockyer, of the 57th Regiment, and was born at Jersey Castle, Jersey (one of the Channel Islands), on 10th Dec., 1819; she was therefore, at time of death, in her 87th year. In the early days of Australia; whilst she was yet in her infancy, her father's regiment was ordered to come out to these shores, and at the age of 15 years deceased was married to the late Captain Potter, of the 28th Regiment, which was then quartered at Parramatta. The regiment was afterwards ordered to go to India, but the Captain decided on remaining in Australia, and settled down to pastoral pursuits on the well known Cavan property, in the Yass district, which, after a few years, developed into a place of great value. At this juncture, and in the year 1849, Captain Potter died, and Major Lockyer, then Police Magistrate at Marulan, took over the management of the station, which for a length of time returned very handsome dividends to members of the family, enabling them to enjoy a reign of affluence. Later on the widow entered into the marriage state a second time, and in the year 1860 she and her husband came and settled down in the Tumut district, where they remained till death removed them hence. The first family consisted of three daughters and five sons-- two of the latter, Messrs Nicholas and Alfred Potter, reside in this district, two reside in Melbourne, and one died at Parkes some years ago; whilst of the daughters one resides in New Zealand and the two others in Sydney. The second family numbered seven-- four daughters and three sons. Of the former two died a considerable time back, and all other members of the second family reside in this district. Deceased was a devoted and kind mother to the whole of her children, who feel with sad affliction the bereavement that has befallen them. Of the family of which the late Mrs. Snodden was a member there only remains one sister (Mrs. McWilliam, of Sydney), and one brother (Mr. Nicholas Lockyer, Chief Commissioner of customs at present but it is rumoured that he is to be appointed to the position of Commonwealth Statistician, one of the most important offices in the States) The funeral, which took place on Monday afternoon, was very numerously alternated. Ven. Archdeacon Owens Mell attended to obsequies at the grave, and Mr. H. W. Hoad efficiently carried out the undertaker's duties.

    • Death of an old Pioneer.

Through remissness on the part of a correspondent we were unable in our last to give details of the death of one of our oldest and most respected pioneers, in the person of Mrs. H. Snodden, whose death took place on 10th inst, at her residence, Newtown, Tumut. As we stated in a previous issue, the deceased had a long and chequered career. She was the 5th daughter of the late Major Lockyer, of the 57th Regiment, and was born on December 10, 1819, at Jersey Castle, Jersey (one of the Channel Islands), and at the time of her death was in her 87th year. When only young her father's regiment was ordered to proceed to Australia, and at the age of 15 years she was married to Captain Potter, of the 28th Regiment, then quartered at Parramatta. His regiment was afterwards ordered to India; but the Captain decided on remaining in Australia, and turned his attention to pastoral pursuits on the well-known Cavan property (in the Yass district), which he stocked and reaped an abundant return from. Whilst riding on horseback, he sustained, from a collision, an attack of white swelling in one of his knees. This confined him to his bed for three years, and was ultimately the cause of his death. At his death, Major Lockyer (then Police Magistrate at Marulan) took over the management of the station, and handsome dividends were the result; consequently the family were able to live in affluence. Later on, the widow married the late Mr. Henry Snodden (an overseer on the run), and in the year 1860 she and her husband came to Tumut, where they remained till summoned hence by death. The first family consisted of three daughters and five sons. Of the former two reside in Sydney and one in New Zealand. Of the latter, Messrs Nicholas and Alfred Potter reside in Tumut, two others in Melbourne, and one died in Parkes some years ago. The second family consisted of four daughters and three sons. Of the former, two died many years ago, one resides in Sydney, and the other is Miss Martha Snodden. Two sons remain Messrs Alex, and Robt. Snodden, of Petfield, Tumut. The deceased, who was of a retiring disposition, was an excellent neighbour, a truly deserving citizen, and a kind and devoted mother to her children, who one and all feel deeply the sad bereavement that has befallen them. The late Mrs. Snodden left behind her in addition to those mentioned, one sister (Mrs. McWilliam, of Sydney) and one brother (Mr. Nicholas Lockyer, Chief Commissioner of the Taxation Office, Sydney). There is a rumor that he is to be appointed to the position of Commonwealth Statistician, one of the most important offices in the States. The funeral took place on Monday, 12th inst., when a large number paid their last tribute of respect to a worthy octogenarian. Her remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the old cemetery. Ven. Archdeacon. T. E. Owens-Mell officiated at the grave, and Mr. H. W. Hoad was the undertaker. We tender the bereaved ones our deepest condolence.

The loved and lost? Why do we call them lost?
Because we miss them from our onward road.
God's unseen angel o'er our pathway crossed,
Looked on us all, and loving them the most,
Straightway relieved them from life's weary load.
