      FALL FROM ROOF
      Woman Witness Tells
      ACCIDENTAL DEATH VERDICT
A woman's desperate attempt to catch a man who was hurtling from the roof of Newcastle Hospital on September 28 was described in the Coroner's Court yesterday when the Acting Coroner (Mr. W. Pickett) conducted an inquest concerning the death of John Edward Purcell, 36, Francis-street, Wallsend.
A verdict of accidental death was returned.
Employed as a plumber at the hospital, Purcell was working on the roof, on the afternoon of September 28, when he fell about 50 feet to the roadway, and was killed outright.
Evidence of having seen the man falling from the roof of the hospital was given by Mrs. Mercy Perry, 78 McMichael-street, Maryville. About l.50 p.m. on September 28, she said, she was approaching the hospital for the purpose of visiting a friend. She noticed a man on the roof, standing near the guttering. He appeared to turn and take a few steps along the roof towards Pacific-street.
"The next instant," witness added "I saw him fall. He screamed, and in falling struck the electric light wires, which seemed to have broken the fall.
"My God, he is falling!"' witness screamed, and rushed forward to try to catch the man, who struck the ground about two yards away from her.
Witness related how she hastened to the man's side. After having placed her hand under his chin, she realised that he was dead. He had not thrown himself from the roof, but either slipped or became giddy.
Mr. Griffiths: Did you notice any rope on the roof?--No.
Was there a ladder?--l did not notice one.
Where was the man standing?--He seemed to be near the guttering facing Hunter-street. The accident happened in a second.
The Coroner: You aced splendidly, Mrs. Perry.
      WORKMATE'S EVIDENCE.
Leslie Jones, 29 Robertson-street, Carrington, an employee of Newcastle Hospital, said that at 2 p.m. of September 28 he was working with Purcell on the roof of the hospital, fixing down-pipe to a drainhead, which was located three or four feet below the roof. The surface was flat but it become necessary at times to work whilst lying down. He had left the roof to bring up some material. Deceased at the time, was standing about four feet from the edge. There was nothing on the roof over which Purcell could have tripped. Witness had been absent five minutes when he heard of the man's death. The topic of conversation between the two men on the roof concerned the Rugby League football final.
In reply to the Coroner, witness said that they ascended to the roof by means of the fire escape, and then through a trap-door in the tower. It would have been necessary at times for deceased to look over the edge to ascertain if the piping fitted properly.
Written statements, which intimated that writers had seen the man falling from the roof, were read by the Coroner. It was not considered necessary to call these people to give evidence. Dr. J. R. Leslie, Government Medical Officer, said that, in his opinion, death was due to shock, caused by a fractured skull.
Myra Alice Purcell, widow, said that she last saw her husband on the morning of September 28. He was then in good health, and was not subject to fainting turns. She had two children, 7 and 11 years of age respectively. Her husband was a native of Brisbane. His life was not insured.
Constable S. J. Pender gave evidence of identification.
The Coroner said that he was satisfied that the fall was accidental and recorded his verdict accordingly.
Mr. J. Griffiths (Rankin and Griffiths) appeared on behalf of the Newcastle Hospital Committee, and the South British Insurance Company; Mr. H. L. Wheeler (Harris, Wheeler and Williams) appeared for the relatives of the deceased. Sergeant F. J. Noble represented the police.
