      Had 237 Descendants
DEATH OF MRS. H. C. STEFFENS
The death occurred on Sunday morning in the Wondai District Hospital of Mrs. Henriette Caroline Steffens, of Moffatdale, a pioneer who spent 74 years in the district and was, perhaps, its oldest lady. She had 237 descendants.

Born at Zugnewinke, Pommern, Germany, on December 18, 1853, she had attained the age of 97 years five months. Her parents were Friedrich and Caroline Schulz (nee Selts). She was married at Osseken, Germany, on September 24, 1874, to Hermann August Ferd. Wessling, and emigrated to Queensland in the ship Charles Dickens in 1876. They lived at Minden, Hatton Vale, and Forest Hill where her husband died in 1898 after 24 years of married life. On January 30, 1900, she was married at Forest Hill to Johann Friedrich Steffens, who died about 10 years later. For 42 years a widow, she resided at first with her son Otto at Tent Hill, then with her daughter, Mrs. C. Rosenblatt at Wheatlands. Since 1919 she was cared for by her second youngest daughter, Mrs. J. A. Bond. She resided with them at Wheatlands and latterly at Moffatdale. The only time she spent in hospital was the last week of her life. During the last three years she was blind, but was not bedridden. Her remarkable constitution enabled her to move about until the last week of her life.

She is survived by six sons and three daughters (one son and two daughters having pre-deceased her), 76 grandchildren, 141 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren, thus having had 237 descendants. The grand old "grannie" was loved and esteemed by old and young of the large family circle.

"Grandmother" Steffens was a true Christian lady with a simple and unwavering faith in God and a remarkable memory of the hymns she learnt in her childhood days. As a citizen she was highly respected by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Her funeral took place to the Murgon cemetery on Monday. Pastor A. E. Reuther conducted the burial services in St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and at the graveside, taking the texts for his addresses from Phil. I, xxi and Rev. II, x.

Her surviving sons are Messrs Otto (Murgon), Hermann (Gatton), Carl (Gympie), Friedrich (Oakdale, via Murgon), Wilhelm (Pialba), Albert (Proston), and daughters, Auguste (Mrs. C. Rosenblatt, Barlil). Minna (Mrs. J. A. Bond, Moffatdale), and Martha (Mrs. F. Dionysius, Hivesville).

An In Memoriam service will be held at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Murgon, on Sunday, June 10.
