      INQUEST AT PENGUIN.
An inquest touching the death of the child Olga Vear Smith, only daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin S. Smith, of South Riana, was held at Penguin yesterday afternoon by the Coroner (Mr. E. D. Atkinson). From the evidence given it appeared that the child, aged a year and 11 months, was playing in the yard with Mary Walker 9 years old. The latter missed the baby, and tried the door of the dairy, which was found to be un-fastened. Entering she saw the baby with its head and arms in the cream can near the separator, and, without disturbing it, ran to the mother, saving "I found Olga playing in the cream." The mother ran to the dairy and found on extricating the child she was apparently dead. With the assistance of a neighbour resuscitation was attempted, but without avail, and Dr. Ferris was telephoned for from Ulverstone. He arrived some hours later, and pronounced life to be extinct. The evidence of Dr. Ferris confirmed this, and the Coroner brought in a verdict of accidentally drowned in a can of cream.
