W/O A. S. Appleton went missing during an attack on a locomotive northwest of Munster on 18 December 1944, whilst flying Spitfire XIV, RM699. He was seen to bale out by Warrant Officer Viv Rossow (see Pilots R) after being hit by flak, and became a POW. Appleton's loss was considered a sad one by the Squadron as "it was agreed that he was an outstanding N.C.O. pilot". Eight locomotives were damaged and stopped by the Squadron around Munster that day. (Source: 41 Squadron ORB, PRO http://www.pro.gov.uk/> Air 27/426)

This article appeared in the Brisbane "Courier Mail" on 7 April 1945:

Q'LD. AIRMEN SMASH JETS
Queensland Spitfire pilots nave again been in the forefront of the battle against German jet planes over Europe.
Recently Warrant Officer V. J. Rossow, of Nanango, flying one of the latest five-blade propellor Spits., was on patrol when he saw a Messerschmitt 262 jet aircraft preparing to land.
"I closed in on him and gave him a long burst," said Rossow. "I noticed strikes around his wing and tail-plane, but he streaked away before I had time to get to another shot."
With Flying Officer E. Gray, of Toowoomba, Rossow then climbed to 6000ft. Gray noticed another jet aircraft 1000ft. below, and dived on it.
"I saw the flashes of my bullets hitting the cockpit of the jet," said Gray, "and saw the jet, apparently out of control, falling through cloud."
On the previous afternoon Gray sighted a Messerschmitt 110. Gray closed in and scored hits on the German plane, and before Gray could turn to attack again, one of his comrades finished off the Messerschmitt.

THE LATEST ARRIVALS.- The ship Friedeburgh, which arrived in the Bay yesterday morning from Hamburg with immigrants, has been ordered into quarantine for eighteen days. Four cases of typhoid fever on board are the cause of this measure. The voyage of the Friedeburg, was altogether of a chequered character. She was compelled to put into Rio de Janeiro for water, the condenser having broken down. Eighteen deaths occurred during the voyage. One person fell overboard and was drowned ; three others died of consumption. The remainder died from the effects of measles.
