Rev FREDERICK CASSIDY was born in December 1812 on a Sunday, probably the 6th (6th or 16th, but 16th was not a Sunday) at 3.0 am, and baptised on the 19th. He did not get an army commission in 1833 aged 20, and got a BA from Trinity College Dublin in 1838; according to Mrs Barbara Cassidi in England.
He was the 4th son of Rev Mark & Henrietta (neé Jackson) Cassidy.
He died at Motueka on 4 August 1890 aged 77, buried 7 August in Motueka Public Cemetery.
He married Martha Brown c1846 (1846-47) in Donegal Ireland. There is a family story that she was a family maid and that he was "defrocked" for eloping or for conducting the ceremony himself. But there is no church record of any "defrocking". A 19 September 1989 letter from the Representative Church Body Library of the Church of Ireland in Dublin gives the only information they had for him that he was a Curate at Dromara in 1844.
He was a Church of Ireland minister (like his brother William). In New Zealand he used the title "Rev" but was not a practising minister. He is in the 1881 Motueka electoral roll as a "Gentleman", and in the 1887 Motueka electoral roll as "of no occupation".

MAN DROWNED IN SOUTH-EAST
Thrilling Rescue Of Young Stepbrother
WIFE WITNESSES TRAGEDY
Fisherman's Boat Capsizes MOUNT GAMBIER, January 8.
Neville Ellison-Rowe, 27, married, a Cape Banks fisherman, was drowned, and his young stepbrother, Ralph Ellison-Rowe, 14, of Port MacDonnell, had a narrow escape when their boat capsized in heavy seas at Carpenter's Rocks today. Neville Ellison-Rowe's wife witnessed the tragedy. Up to a late hour tonight Neville Ellison-Rowe's body had not been recovered. The boy was removed to his home, where he is suffering from shock. Accompanied by his stepbrother, Neville Ellison-Rowe was fishing off Johnson Reef about a mile from the beach at Carpenter's Rocks. It is recognised as a dangerous point, and there was a strong southerly swell. A man named Shelton noticed that the 14-ft. boat, which had the sail erected had capsized, and he raced to where several other fishermen were working on a boat. Four men Percy Fish (28), Colin Wilson (30), Kelvin Clifton Taylor(39), and Alf Wilson launched a flat-bottomed boat and prepared to go to the rescue, but the boat would not hold four, and the lastnamed jumped out. With two men pulling on the oars and a third bailing frantically, the fishermen eventually reached the upturned fishing boat, to which young Ellison-Rowe was still clinging but in imminent danger of being washed off by the heavy seas.
Rope Thrown
The rescuers were able to manoeuvre their boat through the breakers until a rope could be thrown to the boy, and he was instructed to tie it around his waist, and with difficulty he was hauled into the other boat on the point or collapse. Ten minutes' search failed to reveal any sign of Neville Ellison-Rowe and Ralph was taken back to the beach for attention. Neville Ellison-Rowe was a good swimmer, but it is believed that he was struck by the mast when the boat capsized. Mounted-Constables R. W. Noblet, of Mount Gambler, and A. J. West, of Port MacDonnell, with the deceased's father, went to Carpenter's Rocks. Ralph Neville-Rowe was too ill to give any coherent account of the tragedy. The deceased was a son of Mr. R. N. Ellison-Rowe, head keeper of the Cape Northumberland lighthouse. He has left a widow, and a daughter, aged two years. He was reputed to be a good boatman. Eye-witnesses highly praised the courageous rescue by the three fishermen.

Passing of a Great Citizen.
ALD. T. RUSSELL, MAYOR OF BALLINA.
Right throughout the Richmond River on Tuesday a deep and genuine feeling of regret was manifested on receipt of the news that Ald. Thomas Russell, Mayor of Ballina, had "crossed the bar" at the comparatively early age of 53 years. His death, which was not altogether unexpected, was due to an incurable throat ailment, from which he had suffered for 18 months or more.
The late Mr. Russell was not only Ballina's first and greatest citizen, but one of the outstanding figures in the public life of the North. A native of Ballina, where his late father had the distinction of being the first public school teacher appointed by the Education Department, he had resided in the town all his life. When quite a youth he displayed striking gifts as a journalist, and was taken on the staff of the now defunct "R.R. Times," under the late Mr. Thos. Temperley. Subsequently he founded the Ballina "Beacon," but four years later rejoined the "Times," and continued thereon till an amalgamation was effected with the "Beacon," and Mr. Meigher assumed control of the incorporated papers. Mr. Russell then assumed the editorship, and filled the position till his retirement from journalism a few years ago. As a journalist he had few peers on the North Coast, for an incisive style, combined with a wide knowledge of men and public affairs, and far seeing vision, found him singularly well equipped for newspaper work. His articles on questions affecting the development and progress of the district were always models of conciseness and information, and proved invaluable to the paper he represented and to the district generally.
As a public man he was beyond all question one of the ablest the Richmond has ever produced. He either led or was prominently identified with every public movement initiated on the Lower Richmond, and his services to the cane industry, to breakwater improvements, to railway agitations, and dredging schemes, to mention but a few, can never be forgotten. A gifted and eloquent speaker he was a veritable tower of strength to any project in whose interests he took the platform, indeed, for many years no public meeting was ever regarded as complete unless "Tom" Russell's presence was assured. Perhaps his best work was done in the last nine or ten years, and during the war period in particular no man rendered greater service to Australia and the Digger in this district than the subject of this notice. As Mayor of Ballina for most of that period he was unflagging in patriotic labors, and ever since has proved himself a genuine friend to the returned soldier. In purely local politics he helped to give Ballina its present electric lighting service, to proclaim far and wide its virtues as a seaside resort, and to make the place worthy of the position he was confident the future had in store for it. Improvements directly effected through his advocacy stand as monuments to him on every hand, and, for ever, let us hope, Russell Park will be a memorial to the citizens' appreciation of his life and labors. Right to the very last he was in harness, guiding the destinies of the town he loved so well, and working for the welfare of the district through the R.R. County Council and other bodies of which he was a member. His last public appearance was at the turning or the sod celebrations a couple of weeks ago, though up to the very day of his death he was about town as usual, and displaying a keen interest in public affairs. Only about 18 months or so ago he paid a special visit to Coraki, at the invitation of the Mayor, and, it will be remembered, addressed a large public meeting in advocacy of the municipal electrical scheme now nearing completion. His splendid address on that occasion won over many waverers, and practically stifled serious opposition to the undertaking. It was characteristic of the man that wherever and whenever he could be of service to the district he never hesitated to lend the requisite support either by voice or pen, and it may truly be said that his activities were an inspiration to all associated with him in great forward movements. He is survived by his wife (who devotedly tended him in his declining days, and tenderly nursed him throughout), by one daughter, Miss Mamie Russell, of Ballina P.S. staff, and by one son, Maurice, a student at Hunter's Hill College.
The funeral on Wednesday was one of the largest ever seen in the district, being attended by representatives of practically every public body in the district. Prior to the obsequies a solemn Requiem Mass was held at St. Xavier's Church, Ballina. | RUSSELL, Thomas (I9650)

On Tuesday evening last Mr. C. H. Olive, of Camira Creek, one of the district's best known residents, passed away somewhat suddenly. Deceased, who was 68 years of age, had been out driving in the afternoon, and was apparently in the best of health. After tea he complained of feeling unwell, and died before medical aid could be obtained. Deceased was a very old settler, and leaves a large family. | OLIVE, Charles Henry (I3356)
